Well it's scheduled to be completed at the end of this year. Here are the pics I took of what it looks like so far....

Some pretty impressive design too. Thanks for posting Jimmy.

Eh, nothing exciting for me. I work about one 'spit' from it, and live about two 'spits' from it. I see it every single day, a very minimum of 4 times. LOL
I'll be glad when they're done with it though... they've only been working on it "forever". We've been back in SA for almost four years now, yet I can remember a couple of years before we moved back that we'd come to visit my dad and step-mom and get bottle-necked there due to closed lanes and night-time work crews.
I often joke that by the time they get it finished, the parts they first constructed will be ready for repairs. lol. It's no wonder other states joke about Texas' roads and highways, and all the construction zones.
Cool pics, Jimmy! How'd you manage to snap photos and stay straight in your lane at the same time!?!?

Almost all the pics were taken from the parking lots of the places adjacent to the interchange, while standing just outside my car while snapping the photos. I drove around the access roads on all four corners of the interchange to get as many angles of it as I could find. It took me nearly a half-hour driving time alone just to drive completely round the interchange through the access roads.

Yeah, I had noticed that the first two were taken on I-10, from the driver's seat.
We live in the I-10/Callaghan area, and we were really disappointed when they closed the Callaghan exit ramp (I-10, heading West) and the Callaghan entrance ramp (I-10, heading East). We had to find new 'short cuts' to get on and off I-10 (both ways) so we wouldn't have to make that trek around the access roads. It can definitely take a little time to make the 'circle' with the stop lights and traffic.
Course, it's still not anywhere nearly as bad as Dallas or Houston, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

CURSES TO THAT INTERCHANGE! That construction was the worst.

It was either build that interchange or continue to see that part of the city get even more clogged with traffic much worse than it is now if they hadn't built it.

It is definitely a site to see.
It should be some fun learning my way around there again.

I remember when that intersection used to be a massive cloverleaf wonder. Now it seems that they are doing away with all of the cloverleafs for some reason.

They are pretty much doing away with the cloverleaf designs because they are not very efficient. San Pedro's cloverleaf is gone, the next one to be gone is the I-10W/1604 interchange by SFFT.

I remember noticing one interchange when I was a kid, whenever we drove to the coast. It must have been I37 and I10 on the southeast side of town. I think it has several stacked lanes and possibly no cloverleafs. But it's been that way for as long as I can remember.

There are still a couple of cloverleaf interchanges around town. Loop 410 and I-10E going towards Houston still has the cloverleaf set up. Same goes for other sections on South Loop 410 and West Loop 410 and Hwy 90. Plans are to eventually get rid of all of them but of course it's going to take a while......especially with the insufficient funding from the state and federal government. The upgrade to 10/410 interchange on the NW side is a blessing, as is the one on 410/281 by the airport.

Well, I wouldn't say it's a blessing, at least not at this point. What a mess, and an inconvenience! Closing exit/entrance ramps for sooo long, removing one exit ramp that won't come back (which was the appropriate exit for us to get home... now we have to take a longer route... grrrr...), narrowing lanes and closing others, to name a few issues that are a pain.
Obviously once it's all complete (but will that be in my lifetime?! LOL) it should be very nice, opening all the lanes back up and getting all the construction equipment off site. One of the freeway entrances has recently been opened back up, which is GREAT, but alas, the exit ramp on the other side will never come back from what I've heard... not happy about that.
But, spit happens I guess. All in the name of progress.

I'm sure one day you'll get over it. LOL j/j Turn that frown  upside down:).
I know the construction is blah right now but once it's all done, it'll be great. That old interchange was horrible and I can only imagine what traffic would be like today had they not constructed all the new flyovers.
Jimmy

The new interchange will have the capacity to handle nearly 700,000 vehicles per day (VPD)....more than double the capacity of the old one. In the old interchange in 2000, the average count was 350,000 VPD, which was far over the capacity and that was an overload for the interchange.
If you guys look at Houston, you'll see dozens of stack interchanges all over the city and virtually no cloverleaf ramps. I think other Texas cities (San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, Dallas and even El Paso) are now trying to move in that direction as state population and therefore traffic continues to grow massively.

Yeah, it will be great to see it completed someday. For the past dozen years or so, we can't head to SFFT or SeaWorld without at least one of us in the car saying, "Gee, is this thing ever going to be finished?"

Unless I'm mistaken, didn't the current work on I10/410 intersection actually start around 1986? That's scary.

No, it started at the beginning of 2000.

If they had proceeded with their original construction plans and built a five-level interchange, the completion would have been 3-5 additional years to the current time frame of construction. As it is, the current four-level interchange construction has taken seven years so far and counting.

OK, so it has been seven summers we've been talking about the interchange on our way to the parks. It just SEEMS longer ...

On a more encouraging note, two of the ramps on the I-410/US-281 Airport Interchange have opened to traffic already with two more delayed for a bit longer. It's only been three years I believe since work began on it and already the bulk of the construction is behind us.
Two more stack interchanges are slated to begin next year including the SFFT Interchange -- I-10/Loop 1604, and the US 281/Loop 1604 (tolled) ramps.
Loop 1604 is being planned to be modeled just like Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8) in Houston, with tolled mainlanes and free (non-tolled) service roads and high-flying directional ramps at all major interchanges.

Yep they are all open although I don't have a link.
Next time I drive through there and am not driving, I'll try to snap some pictures.
